Process Overview

Pipe bursting is a form of trenchless pipe rehabilitation. Unlike traditional pipe repair methods that require the excavation of a long, wide trench, bursting only requires one or two small access pits. At the entry pit, a pump powers the pulling unit with the bursting head. The head attaches to the replacement pipe and pulls it while simultaneously breaking and pushing away the old pipe. The receiving pit accepts the expander head and new pipe.

Required Equipment

Five types of pipe bursting supplies are required to burst pipes. These include a hydraulic pump, pulling machine, retaining device, pulling rods, and a pipe bursting head. The setup also requires steel or swaged cable, a duct rodder, and gauges for accurate pressure measurements.
